Kingston Museum has announced its second biennial contemporary art exhibition which will run from 4 May to 7 July this year and celebrate the life and works of pioneering Kingston-born photographer and inventor Eadweard Muybridge.

This year’s exhibition will showcase 24 Kingston-based artists’ responses to Kingston Museum’s photographic Muybridge Collection, including Andrea Muheim, Annamarie Dzendrowskyj, Bee Smith, Bronwen Ackhurst, Chris Birch, Debra Lee Taylor, Derek Turner, Emily Limna, Ilsa Brittain, Ixchel Prada, Jan Lee Johnson, Jenny Meehan, Jeong Min Moon, Lizzie Brewer, Loraine Monk, Louise Anderson, Lucy Birkbeck, Paul Mowatt, Paul Smith, Ruth Blackford, Sarah E. Choi, Shiji Liang, Su Bonfanti, and Terence Sweeney. The works of six other artists who have been invited to exhibit their work will also be displayed.

Seoyoung Kim, Curator at Kingston Museum, said: “This year presents an opportunity to work on the heritage offered by Muybridge’s collection owned by the museum and the importance of its presence in Kingston. This is one of the most important collections at the museum.

“Kingston Museum aspires to be an art centre for the borough and beyond and we are very proud to once again display the work of professional local artists. The museum also offers a unique opportunity for artists to interact with the museum collections.”

Muybridge was a pioneer of movement and motion pictures projection and his work continues to have a wide-ranging influence on modern culture today. In 1904 he passed his personal collection to the newly built Kingston Museum. The Muybridge Collection at Kingston Museum is one of four preeminent collections worldwide, with a distinctive local and personal connection to the photographer himself.

‘Kingston Art 2018: My Muybridge’ contemporary art exhibition, sponsored by CassArt, is free to attend at Kingston Museum on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 10am to 5pm, and on Thursdays from 10am to 7pm from 4 May to 7 July.
